Materials

  1. Tunisian crochet hook
  2. Worsted weight yarn in your desired color for the base fabric.
  3. A contrasting color yarn for the rose petals.
  4. Yarn needle
  5. Scissors

Step 1: Tunisian Crochet Base

Start with a foundation chain of the desired length for your project. The number of chains should be a multiple of the number of stitches required for the Tunisian stitch pattern you want to use.

Insert your Tunisian crochet hook into the second chain from the hook, yarn over, and pull up a loop. Leave this loop on the hook.

Continue to insert your hook into each chain, yarn over, and pull up a loop, leaving them on the hook. This process is called the “forward pass.”

Once you have all the loops on the hook, work the “return pass” by chaining one and then yarning over and pulling through two loops at a time until you have one loop left on the hook.

Repeat steps 2-4 until you reach your desired width for the base fabric.

Step 2: Creating the 3D Rose Petals

To create the rose petals, you will need to make several small crochet pieces that will be shaped into petals and sewn onto the base fabric.

Begin by chaining a small number of stitches (e.g., 4-6) with your contrasting color yarn.

Slip stitch into the second chain from the hook to form a small ring.

In the ring, work a combination of stitches such as single crochets, half-double crochets, or double crochets, depending on how big you want the petals to be. Make sure to increase the number of stitches as you go to create a petal shape.

When you’ve reached the desired size for the petal, finish it off by slip stitching into the ring and cutting the yarn, leaving a tail for sewing.

Repeat the process to create as many petals as you need for your project.

Step 3: Attaching the Rose Petals

Lay out your base fabric with the Tunisian crochet stitches facing you.

Arrange the crochet petals on the base fabric in a rose-like pattern. Overlap them slightly to create a natural-looking rose shape.

Thread a yarn needle with the tail of one of the petals.

Sew the petals onto the base fabric, making sure to secure them in place by stitching through both the petals and the base fabric. Use a matching color yarn to make the stitches less visible if desired.

Continue attaching all the petals in the same manner until your 3D rose is complete.

Step 4: Finishing

Weave in any loose yarn ends on both the base fabric and the petals.

Block your Tunisian crochet project if necessary to shape it and set the stitches.

Your Tunisian crochet project with 3D rose petals is now complete! You can use this technique to create various items like scarves, shawls, blankets, or decorative pieces with beautiful rose embellishments.
